Lost in Quebec: A weekend in La Malbaie

Lost in Quebec: A weekend in La Malbaie

I discovered the small town of La Malbaie, Quebec a few years ago when l was on the hunt for the perfect cabin getaway near Quebec City.  After hours of searching, I discovered Les Chalets De Moh, a set of charming traditional log cabins tucked in a Narnia-esque setting in the woods. When Rikki and I stumbled upon this gem, we knew we had to book it.  Fast forward a few years later and I still couldn’t quite shake the memory of our time here.  Sure, there are plenty of cabins in Ontario but this one was very special.  While it is definitely a trek from Toronto (about 9 hours), it’s the perfect add-on to your next Quebec City trip. What really sold us the most was the beautiful cedar hot tub perfectly nestled in front of the cabin surrounded by snow-covered trees and mountains in the distance.  It’s picture perfect.

Where is La Malbaie?
La Malbaie is located in the charming Charlevoix region of Quebec. It's about a 9-hour drive from Toronto, about 5 hours east of Montreal, and about 2 hours east of Québec City.

Les Chalets De Moh
Les Chalets De Moh consists of 8 log cabins in various sizes for families and groups. Booking a cabin at Les Chalets De Moh can be done directly from their website, although they are also listed on Airbnb and Booking.com.

What we did:
While there are many places to see and explore in the summer months, winter is a little more limiting to winter sports like skiing and snowmobiling.  In our case, we just wanted a relaxing, low-key weekend away for my birthday.  While I can appreciate winter activities, the focus of this particular trip was to relax and unwind. When we weren’t enjoying the hot tub or lounging around, we went on nice long walks to enjoy the outdoors. There’s a beautiful river nearby and hearing the sound of the water trickle its way through the forest was so soothing.

What we ate:
As part of our relaxing weekend away, the idea was to cook our meals in the cabin, but no trip to Quebec (especially smaller towns) is complete without one of my favourite guilty pleasures: POUTINE.  Yes, I know it might be a little cliché, but I seriously can’t be in this province without having it.  And while poutine is available Canada wide, it really hits different in Quebec. The fries are always freshly cut, the gravy made with love and care, and the cheese curds sourced locally, adding its own unique flavour.  It’s seriously a must.  We stumbled upon an unpretentious restaurant located in an arena and while it seemed like nothing special, this women owned restaurant packed a fierce punch.  We had the poutine which also doubled as my birthday cake.  It was absolutely delicious.

Les Chalets de Moh in La Malbaie was the perfect way to spend my birthday. This past holiday season was a little overwhelming.  We went from 0 to 100 in comparison to the previous two years of covid, resulting in me feeling a little burnt out. I needed a nice winter escape to pause and reflect. And nothing is more relaxing than a beautiful hot tub surrounded by nature.
