Lost in New Orleans: My top 5 things to do in The Big Easy

For as long as I can remember, New Orleans has been on my bucket list.  It took me 36 years to finally make it happen and it surpassed every expectation I had.  From beignets, crawfish and gumbo to jazz, art and voodoo magic, the city is bursting with rich history, a lively culture and a vibe you have to experience to understand.  It is the gift keeps on giving.  Just when you think you’ve got a grasp on it, it unveils another layer, further drawing you into its rapture.

Here are my top 5 things to do down in The Big Easy:

1) Food, food and more food!
It shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that New Orleans is a food lover’s dream.  The food is infused with delicious flavours from Creole and Cajun cuisines, mixed with good ol’ southern comfort food.  Being situated along to the Mississippi River and close to the gulf of Mexico, seafood plays a big part in the cuisine. Don’t leave without trying: Po’ Boys, gumbo, fried chicken, beignets and crawfish.

2) Get lost in the French Quarter
The French quarter is probably the most popular neighborhood in New Orleans.  You’ll find beautiful Spanish and French inspired buildings with the iconic cast iron balconies.  I spent most of my time in this neighborhood and you will be surrounded by music, art, restaurants, bars and beautiful architecture. It is the heart and soul of the city.  If you’re lucky, you’ll even see a ‘second line’ parade down the street. I witnessed one and the energy was contagious.  The streets are bursting with life.
Tip: One of the most popular and iconic buildings (pictured below) is located at the corner of Royal and St. Peter’s street.

3) Explore the French Market
The French Market is open 365 days a year from 10AM to 6PM and is filled with antiques, souvenirs, art and delicious food.  It’s constantly buzzing with all types of merchants: from voodoo doll sellers, to tarot card readers and street artists.  Make an afternoon of it by having a bite at one of the food stands followed by some shopping.
Tip: Make sure to try Loretta’s melt in your mouth praline beignets.

4) Bar hop
New Orleans is flooded with bars.  There are many quick ‘grab and go’ bars where you are able to buy all kinds of drinks in takeaway cups to continue exploring the streets with a drink in hand.  New Orleans is also known for its delicious cocktails so be sure to pop into a few bars.  One of my favourites was the famous ‘Carousel Bar’ at Hotel Monteleon.  It’s a beautiful, ornate classic carousel that spins slowly while you enjoy a refreshing cocktail.
Tip: If you don’t get a seat at the carousel right away, grab a seat nearby and simply ask a group to let you know when they are leaving. It works like a charm and I saw many people doing this.

5) Take a stroll through The Garden District
The Garden District is a neighborhood with quaint streets filled with beautiful homes that have character and charm.  There are smaller cottage style homes as well as large, beautiful mansions.  Several famous movies/tv shows have been set and filled in this neighborhood, such as American Horror Story. It’s a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the downtown core.

I sometimes find myself comparing certain places to others as a way to describe a place I have visited to someone else.

As the late Anthony Bordain once said:

“There is no place on Earth even remotely like New Orleans. Don’t even try to compare it to anywhere else”.

I couldn’t agree more.
