Lost in Ontario: A Perfect Weekend Getaway in Belleville!

I discovered the city of Belleville several years ago and ever since, it has been one of my favourite places to visit in Ontario. Situated on the eastern part of Lake Ontario and on the north side of the Bay of Quinte, Belleville is a charming gem nestled just two hours away from the bustling cityscape of Toronto. If you're looking for the perfect road trip, Belleville has it all. From delicious restaurants to rich cultural heritage, this vibrant city is the perfect road trip destination. Given its location (and being surrounded by water), Belleville also boasts some of the best patios in southern Ontario.

I recently visited this charming city and here are my recommendations on places to visit, things to do, and of course: some of the best patios to visit!

Where to Stay:

TownePlace Suites by Marriott
If you're planning a weekend escape to Belleville, Ontario, TownePlace Suites is super affordable. This cozy hotel offers a perfect blend of comfort and convenience, located only minutes away from all of the attractions. With its modern amenities and friendly staff, you're sure to feel right at home. A hot breakfast is also included which is the perfect way to start your day.

Where to Eat:

The Local Social House
When it comes to dining in Belleville, The Local Social House is a must-visit. Situated right on the Moira River, this new dining spot (which opened in February) offers a mesmerizing view of the Moira River and the charming arch bridge in Downtown Belleville. On Friday evenings, you can unwind on their patio with curated cocktails, a menu that includes locally-sourced ingredients, and live music to set the perfect ambiance.

L'Auberge de France
For those craving a taste of Paris in the heart of Belleville, L'Auberge de France is the place to be. Indulge in delicious sandwiches made with freshly baked bread, complemented by a flavourful soup or salad. We had the croque monsieur with a tomato soup and it was absolutely delicious. The charming patio creates an authentic French atmosphere that adds to the overall dining experience. This was one of my favourite meals during my visit.

Signal Brewery
If you're a fan of craft beer and wood-fired pizza, Signal Brewery has you covered. This establishment boasts the largest waterfront patio in the region, running alongside the picturesque Moira River. It’s probably one of the coolest patios I’ve seen. We saw cranes in the distance and watching the wildlife was peaceful. The combination of refreshing craft beer and stunning views makes it an ideal spot to relax and unwind during your weekend road trip.

Boathouse Seafood Restaurant
Nestled along the scenic shores of Belleville, Ontario, the Boathouse Seafood Restaurant is a true gem for seafood and a beautiful patio. I’ve been here several times and it never disappoints. This restaurant boasts a prime location with stunning waterfront views of the harbour, creating the perfect setting to savour seafood delights. Whether you're enjoying a romantic dinner for two or gathering with friends and family, the inviting ambiance and top-notch service ensure that your visit will be nothing short of amazing.

Things to Do:

Belleville Farmers Market
Don't miss the chance to explore the Belleville Farmers Market during your weekend getaway. It’s open year round on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8am to 5pm. I absolutely love this market. It’s a treasure trove of fresh produce, artisanal goods, and local delights. Engage with friendly vendors, sample delicious treats, and soak in the lively atmosphere as you discover the flavours and crafts that make Belleville unique. One vendor in particular specialized in traditional Chinese dumplings and they were mouthwatering. I also purchased a beautiful bouquet of flowers at a fraction of the price of what they would cost in the city.

Glanmore National Historic Site
For history enthusiasts, or if you’re anything like me and love historic homes, Glanmore National Historic Site is a must-see attraction. This elegant mansion offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the opulence and lifestyle of the late 19th-century Belleville elite. Stroll through beautifully restored rooms, admire antique furnishings, and learn about the rich heritage of the region. The gentleman at the ticket counter was super informative and gave us a great introduction before we set off to explore on our own. Highly recommend an afternoon there.

Bocce Golf at Black Bear Ridge
Rikki and I had never heard of bocce golf until this experience and let me tell you, it was super fun! Enjoy a leisurely afternoon of bocce golf at Black Bear Ridge. This fun and accessible activity which is a blend of bocce ball and golf, is  perfect for friends and family. The beautiful surroundings of the golf course add to the charm of the game, making it a perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon.

A weekend road trip to Belleville, Ontario, promises an unforgettable experience filled with delicious food, exciting activities, and comfortable accommodations. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or a mix of both, Belleville has something to offer for everybody. So pack your bags, hit the road, and immerse yourself in the beauty and warmth of this beautiful city. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
